Fatty Liver Epidemic: Here's Why The Corporates Need To Keep Holistic Health In Check
Remember, Fatty Liver is a slow degenerative process, which if managed well through effective diet and exercise; can be arrested and reversed.
What is Fatty Liver?
Fatty liver, or steatosis, is a term that describes the buildup of fat in the liver. While it's normal to have some fat in your liver, more than 5 to 10 per cent of your liver weight is fat in the case of fatty liver. While the genesis of the above 2 conditions may vary. The major issues that drive it which are pertinent to India are stress, unhealthy and untimely eating (lots of sugar and carbohydrates in the food, late-night meals), in-active lifestyle, being overweight, obese, diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption and the other elements of the metabolic syndrome.
We have to understand that we are a population at risk. We can go on to develop fibrosis as a consequence of the fatty liver and that leads to cirrhosis, which in turn leads to liver failure. It may even further conspire to cause other health states like cardiac issues and high BP that may lead to severe hypertension and even pontine brain haemorrhage (like in case of my father).

Ways to manage a Fatty Liver?
Diet
- Stop or reduce alcohol intake significantly
- Eat only as much you can burn
- Reduce the intake of sugar and simple carbohydrates
- Fibre-rich vegetables help
- Switch to lean proteins
- Drinking warm water early in mornings and eating early dinners (By 7 PM) can be a miracle
4 Steps Plan
- Find out reasons and ways of engaging in the physical movement of the body
- Leisure walk doesn't help much. Try to switch to brisk walks soon
- Focus on cardio and natural bodyweight pieces of training. Yoga is a great addition. At least 4 days in a week
- Use breathing exercises and meditation to de-stress daily (now you can do that sitting on the rear seat of the car, after all, what’s great fun watching traffic anyways!!)
Same as most other health disorders that are caused due to improper eating patterns. Talk more about these issues, read more about them. Create an environment in your workplaces and even your homes where people discuss these issues, address them from time to time and start taking them seriously. Your body has a natural ability to then rebuild itself we just need to help that process.
